Joy Akaa
Student-at-Law
Joy Akaa is an articling student at Access Law, where she assists in various areas of law, including family, wills and estates, employment, and contract law. Joy is committed to providing thorough legal research, drafting, and client support.
Joy obtained her LLB from the University of Benin, Nigeria, an LLM in Petroleum Law and Policy from the University of Dundee, UK, and LLM in Canadian Common Law at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.
Joy has worked as a practising lawyer in Nigeria, and as a contract professional in Scotland and Canada for nearly 20 years drafting contracts, managing risks, and monitoring compliance in the oil and gas, mining, telecommunications, and IT industries. Joy has contributed to the legal community in Calgary by volunteering for Calgary Legal Guidance and Pro Bono Law Alberta. She is also an active member of the Canadian Bar Association, where she functions as an executive member on the Health Law Section Committee and a member of the South Alberta Family Law Section. Her passion for the law is enforced by a strong analytical approach, dedication to client service, and advancing the legal profession.
In her spare time, Joy enjoys spending time with family, cooking, listening to classical music, and cultural tourism.
